The idea for this painting was to challenge myself by committing to working at a larger scale. I have worked on paintings almost as large, but none of them have been on canvas. I started by filling the canvas with paint, and layering on different textures and using new tools to get textures that didn't look like they were painted with a brush. I enjoy working with graphic elements in my artwork, and I am really interested in being able to create something that makes the viewer wonder how it was created. I initially aimed to have minimal symbolism and experiment primarily with texture. The painting contrasts complex colors and textures and layers with simple tube-colors drawn in a more childish way. The painting process involved making quick decisions and not being afraid to cover up old work. There are probably a dozen layers under the painting. I considered the painting to be done when I felt it had a balance between abstract and symbolic elements, and overall color balance between the different portions of the painting. Working on a large canvas was not as difficult as I had anticipated, however I had to learn how to work with much larger amounts of paint so as not to have to recreate colors.
