PROJECT 2

My goal for this project was to explore a narrow depth of field and experiment with motion using longer exposure times. I enjoyed this assignment because it offered me a challenge. I was used to setting up shots with a low aperture since it allows me to shoot in settings with worse lighting, however I found it more difficult to work with motion, since it often required tracking a moving object like a car, or looking out a window, which did not give me much time to set up the shot, or recreate it if I needed to. With some of these images, I wish I could've had a zoom lens, like in the Mall of America, with the roller coasters image, I wanted to zoom in on the roller coaster to get a better shot, I couldn't because of my fixed lens. Most of these were shot during my trip to Minnesota, where I enjoyed having my camera because of the variation of location. The photo with the fern was one of my favourites, because of the sense of space the photo creates, as well as the lighting in the church that I took the photo in. I felt like this project was a success for me, because although I wasn't able to set up photos as well as I am used to (for the motion shots), I became better and more used to shooting with long exposure times, and reacting to situations quickly to get shots of interesting subjects. I also feel that my prints for this project were actually better than the digital scans, because I was able to pull out a cleaner contrast in the darkroom, and I had enough time to perfect my individual prints.
